What is a Superyacht / Megayacht?

A super yacht is a large yacht, sailing or motor that is 24 meters long or over. They can be known as luxury yachts, superyachts, megayachts and, reserved for the very very big, gigayachts.
Superyachts are very expensive playthings for the very rich and not only do they cost a lot to build or purchase, they also cost an enormous amount to run; an annual sum of around 10% of purchase price.
So if a yacht cost $20 million to buy you will be looking at around $2 million a year to keep her running in ship shape.
That $2 million covers things like management fees, berthing fees, maintenance, fuel and of course crew. Which is where YOU come in.

Where, What and Who will build me my yacht?
You can find a list of all the major superyacht builders on this site but there a few king players, namely Lurssen, Feadship, Blohm& Voss, ABeking & Rasmussen, Oceanco and Wally.
To build a yacht from scratch can take as long as two to five years and you may have to excercise patience as there are significant waiting lists with some companies. In fact, it’s said that if you were to line up all the scheduled and current Superyacht builds in a neat, nose to tail row, you would get a line of yachts exceeding 14 miles.

What job could I do onboard?
There is a huge crew shortage in the industry at the moment, from entry level up. Entry level would be crew like deckhands, stewardesses and stewards, chefs and crew chef and assistant engineers. Engineers are also very much in demand as are officers.
Jobs on board fall loosely into two categories; interior and exterior crew and obviously chefs and cooks, stewardesses fall under Interior Crew. Deckhands, bo’suns, engineers, officers are grouped under exterior crew.

Of course it depends what job you want but to go in as entry level crew you will need your STCW’95 basic Safety training.

Great site guys, thanks very much. Have a question for you though. You say we can earn lots of money but you don’t give a salary table on the site.
How much is a lot of money?

Hi, Thanks for getting in touch. I will put up a salary chart in the next couple of weeks. There are however things to be considered when it comes to salary scales.
Many people have heard of ‘Extreme Salaries’ in yachting where Captains are earning a 1/4 of a million a year. This is NOT the norm!
Things that might affect how much you earn:
- Motor or Sail - Flag - Your Experience - Tenure - Base
Article to follow. Cheers Jen
